Comanche Moon

Apart from this Muppet Show kick, the only other thing I've been watching is this Comanche Moon miniseries. Interesting juxtaposition. Here is some visual aide goodness...

IMDB won't let you "steal" (right click & save) any of their publicity stills so I had to work around that by alt+Print Screen , pasting my screen caps into Paint, and then selecting just the desired pic, copy & paste to a new Paint doc. Now, since I had to go thru all that rigamarole, I figure I might as well get some collage action happenin'.

In the upper left hand pic we have a character called "Famous Shoes" (guess which one?) which I mention simply because that's one of the more awesome Indian names I've ever heard. If I were an Indian, I would like a name like that, although I feel sure they didn't just arbitrarily name themselves. One would have to earn a nickname. I imagine Famous Shoes got his on account o' him being a much sought-after scout.(But what do I know??) Also worth noting about Famous Shoes...he is a Kickapoo. Huh ha huh-huh..kickapoo.

In the lower picture we see the fabulous Val Kilmer who plays Inish Scull. He doesn't look like this in most of the movie (thus far anyhow....part III airs tonight) he looks like roadkill. But ol' Val Kilmer is charming enough to transcend any grody exterior. He's got a different accent but is sort of channeling his inner Doc Holiday (from Tombstone which indisputably owes 99.9% of its rad-ness to Kilmer's Doc). He gets taken prisoner and is hanging there in this primitive stick-work cage (as I recall him doing in some scene in Willow ) and he is belting out opera in German (which he did NOT do in Willow) to keep his spirits up...I SO appreciate that. I should like to learn to sing opera in some foreign language just for the remote possibility that I am taken captive and I'll have this grand and fabulous way to simultaneously keep my spirits up and annoy the piss outta my captors. That would be great, but 'tis pretty ambitious, so my back-up goal is to master the Modern Major General song (no bilingualism required...just monster lung capacity). Anyways back to the Inish Scull character...near the end of his confinement he's looking a bit like Kilmer did in The Doors but the bloated, death's-door version of Jim Morrison....plus scabs and fleas.

Karl Urban (upper right side pic) gets featured here solo because .. .siiigh....he is just FINE. In a very smoldery sorta way. Which is not to belittle the draw of Steve Zahn (upper left pic, crotch shot) . I LOVE Steve Zahn. He's not real smoldery, but he has his own appeal. I think the most applicable adjective would be "adorable". Is it insulting to call a grown man adorable? Sorry Zahn, but you are.

Judging from most of the rumblings on IMDB, the majority of viewers kinda detest this movie. Seems though, that most detractors are these diehard Western buffs/people who've read the source novel. Don't know why these people should be all crotchety...Larry McMurtry had a big hand in the screenplay...so if he doesn't take umbrage with deviations from the book then..then..just simmer the hell down. But admittedly, I am dabbler in this genre so am consequently very easy to please. I look at a Western like it's any other period drama...like to look at the men in old timey threads, and care more about the romantic denoument than I do about the horsemanship or the authenticity of the Comanche dialect or what have you. Although, the romantic denouement in this prequel is a foregone conclusion (a shitty one) as I've seen Lonesome Dove and therefore know that McCrae & Call wind up lonely old workaholic geezers. But still, I find it an enjoyable enough way to pass 2hrs...on account of Zahn's utter affability (rather, his adorable affability) Kilmer's quirk, and Urban's hot silent smolderyness (I mean, he's seriously silent... they give him an approximate 2 minutes of total dialogue per 2 hr installment).

ERIN GO BRAGH!!

I am very glum to see St Patrick's Day pass us by. I am exceedingly fond of that holiday. I am only 1/4 Irish but I think it's one of my finer quarters. I extended St Pat's this year so it took up the whole weekend--wearing my St Pat's finery on Fri, more green garb on Sat & a St Patty's party (where I ingested a good deal of Irish beer) and then listening to the Cheiftains at my sister's yesterday where we had a big corned beef & cabbage feed. MMMMmmm. But even after all that St Pattying, I could still go for some more. I suppose that part of the reason that I adore St P's Day so, is that the nearest preceding holiday is Valentine's Day...which is a sadistic bitch of a holiday for us singletons. Well there is President's Day in the meantime there, which is neither sadistic nor a bitch, but really, who gives a toss about President's Day unless they're buying a car???

I think we oughtta get the entire month of March designated "Irish Appreciation Month" Or would "Ireland Appreciation Month" be a more proper phrasing? I will have to get that point nailed down before I fire off my letter to Congress.

My sister sent me home last night with a buttload of boiled dinner leftovers that I brought in for lunch today. And then I get in here this a.m. and mi amiga/ officemate Lisa had brought me in a plate of her boiled dinner leftovers PLUS a St Patty's cupcake PLUS a hunk of homemade Irish soda bread (incidentally, I picked up some Irish soda bread @ Price Chopper for Sat's party...didn't want to be bothered w/ making anything. It was VERY good..I heartily recommend. At least I can recommend the white variety with raisins... Laura made Brown Irish Soda Bread for yesterday's dinner and it was very heavy and kinda plain) They so good to me. Although I think Lisa more so because she is not bound by the laws of nature to take care of me. Methinks I may have to by extra Mother's Day gifts this year.

So yeah, courtesy of Lisa, I had a magnificent lunch today-- corned beef, potato, carrots, turnip and a few beets. The beets are a novel twist on boiled dinner --to me anyhow-- but were very yummy. Same thing for lunch tomorrow... different chef, sans beets.
One would think that if you had boiled dinner everyday, you'd get sick to death of it, and probably develop a tremendous hankerin' for pizza. But I can't imagine it...getting sick of boiled dinner that is (I mean, the pizza jones I can most definitely relate to ... I could go for pizza just about anytime...a fact which does not, however, negate or decrease my love of boiled dinner)
I don't know why I got to thinking about The Prisoner -- oh hells yeah, now I remember, it was because today is Patrick "Number Six" McGoohan's 79th birthday (because not a single celeb birthday goes by without my knowing it...well maybe a few...but really, they'd have to be like, sub-Z list celeb) Anyways, the DVD set of this show has caught my eye whilest Borders browsing before and it kinda intrigued me. Six's 79th got me musing over it again today, and because it was oddly slow around here today (not that I'd complain about that!) I was reading all about it online.
Briefest of overviews-- it was this cult British series that ran for 17 episodes (in 1967 in the UK, aired in 1968 over here) where this spy guy quits his job over an unspecified "issue of conscience" and soon thereafter is drugged and taken to "The Village" --a prison dressed up to look like a resort town, where everyone is monitored by secret cameras and addressed by a number (no one has a name...not even the main character). Oh...and possibly the most enticing bit-- there are "Rovers" , big white weather balloons that beset would-be escapees and smash them to death and/or into submission. Does that not sound like TOTALLY my cup of tea?? If you're shaking your head "no" then you don't know me at all, fool!!
I'm puzzled though... if this show ran for just 17 episodes...what the HELL is up with this??
Yeah, I was contemplating purchase of the series on Amazon...but I was displeased at the enormity of the DVD set.
Sure...it's swell of them to put them in those space-saving slim cases, but couldn't they have fit 17 episodes on fewer than 10 DVDs?? C'mon!! That's like (typing fingers pause suddenly & hover uncertainly in the air above keys, brow furrows, tongue pokes out of corner of mouth in unseemly show of concentration as blogger tries to do simple math in her head) a maximum of 17 hours of TV...ummm uhhh..let's say an approximate 4 hr capacity on your average DVD. They should be able to do it in 4 DVDs but if they did the double-sided disc thing they could get it onto 2 discs. Then you could have the thing in one case, a regular size DVD case, but still it'd spare you from the storage quandary of having the colossal brick of slim cases in your DVD library.
Ehhh, I still might buy it. Amazon's price is about half of what I saw it selling at Borders for and I love a bargain like Gargamel hates Smurfs. Like Garfield loves lasagna. Oy. Like, like...Sonny loves Cocoa Puffs. Nope.. no, I'm sorry! Lame, lame, LAME-ASS! There must be something wrong with the simile synapsis in my brain. I keep firing off duds. I give up.

when I have a spare 15 hours. . .

In past posts, (or at least one that I can think of) I have shared my curiosity over the late 60s Brit series The Prisoner. The premise (read the 1st paragraph of THIS article, I'm too pooped to type it all out) has always intrigued the hell out of me. .. the whole thing seemed so kooky that I couldn't help but love it. I have long been toying with the idea of buying the complete series but the cheapest price I can find on that DVD set is approx. $50. That's too much moolah for me to shill out on a hunch. I mean, it seems like totally my bag, but I've never actually seen an episode.

Well, I just discovered that AMC has the entire series on their website!! This is undoubtedly to lure people into watching the remake of the show that AMC is soon launching (which I will probably skip, thanks anyway) But what a find! All 17 episodes--full length!! Huzzah!!

Now if only I could find Dark Shadows online (which I'm sure would be much, MUCH trickier to find in its entirety-- The Prisoner only ran for 17 eps, whereas DS was ??# of episodes and ran for 5years.)

kooky new addition to my Amazon wish list...

Having never seen an episode of Dark Shadows, I nonetheless find myself suddenly very intrigued by the show. I think it sprang up as an Amazon recommendation when I looked up American Gothic ...I LOOOVED that tragically short lived show and thought of it today because today happens to be the 49th birthday of one Mr. Shaun Cassidy--he of the Da-doo-ron-ron album with the ginormo head shot of him sporting a stupid visor (I hate visors) and also the producer of American Gothic. Oh fiiiiine...here is the visual aide goodness you're dyin' for...

Yep...we owned this. After hunting down the album cover image, yes, I do realize that that is NOT a horrible visor. In my mind's eye's misty memories it was a visor, but we learn that in real life it was not. But that is a queer looking cap there, no?? I remember kind of crushing over this album cover (when I was like, in kindnergarten, which is silly enough, I should've been ga-ga over that kid in E.T. or something. Yeah..Henry Thomas..not the gawky older brother... whatever happened to that dude anyways??) For the record...this is no longer twitterpation inducing to me. Dude is WAAAY too pretty. But I have digressed severely... back to Dark Shadows...

I read it was SC's b-day, thought of that great show he produced and went to put it on my Amazon wish list, after which, Amazon spit back Dark Shadows as a recommendation. So I read up on it a lot here and a li'l bit on Amazon. And then I was pretty quickly convinced that this was a show for me...much like that sudden fixation I had earlier this year with The Prisoner (also on my wish list) . I just thought it totally sounded (pardon the trite phrase) "right up my alley". I added "Dark Shadows: DVD Collection Vol 1" to the wish list and more and more volumes would spring up (which I would add to the wish list). So there are 26 Volumes. Seems like they could condense this somehow? Where's the damned box set??

Fittingly, it is storming pretty hellaciously outside (the right sort of atmospheric conditions for like, I dunno, a vampiric soap opera or somethin') . I started this post (this **BONUS** post) to kill time waiting for the T-storms to taper off before I made a dash for my vehicle. But--just my flippin' luck-- the weather seems to have intensified out there.

I would set up a cot and crash in me cubby, if it weren't for the season premiere of The Office tonight...

"I swear on my fake balls.."

Yeeeah...best line of last night's Nip/Tuck episode goes to Larry Hagman (Burt). That made me chuckle. I suppose being able to say that would somewhat (but certainly not entirely) make up for having a pair of falsies. Maybe not.
Anyways, it would definitely be creepy having old Burt & his prosthetic kiwis watching you do it. But c'moooon! It's definitely not the kinkiest thing Christian has done. It's Swinging 101 stuff, really. You'll recall at the start of the season, he had a mother & daughter threesome--that has a way higher ewwww rating (I think). But I guess he's finding this so much more reprehensible because he's in loooooove with this Michele chick. Bah. I'm sick of her and sick of how sappy Christian is over her. The sooner she gets busted (& imprisoned) for kidney-napping, the better. She started off her Nip/Tuck stint as a cold bitch, all "I went to med school and I'm a smart one, also I have beaucoup bucks and I will bulldoze you with my wealth and power" but really quickly devolved into a pouty damsel-in-distress type. I would rather see Christian with anyone rather than her...was glad to see him seducing Kimber in the previews for next week's eppy. Actually, I think I'd like to see him hook up with crazy Dr BrookeShields. She's a crafty bitch, that one. And yeah, maybe a smidgeon off kilter in the noggin, but I prefer her over pouty Michele any day.

My cable was all screwy last night, and FX went out for a few moments when Monica got drilled by a vehicle (a bus, wasn't it?) But I did see the part with her hollering in the middle of the road, utterly heedless of traffic, and sensed then that a vehicle was going to mow her loopy ass down any second. Can I call 'em or what?? So that was a mighty convenient turn of events, really. The downside is that it seems to have sent Sean unequivocably around the bend, so to speak. One imaginary pal can be dismissed as mere quirkiness, but two??? Uh-oh. That's one pookah too many and he's officially and totally guano loco. Maybe Matt's Scientology posse can help him out??

Just spotted this news item. Strikes me as oddball. Although I do think if a gal is kept prisoner in a basement for about 9 years, consequent oddball behavior would be entirely understandable. She's a better lass than I, I must say. I imagine if I were in her shoes, I would only want ownership of that house in order to bulldoze the hellhole and I wouldn't give a sweet rat's arse where my captor's mother lived. But maybe not ... after all, I can't definitively say what sort of character I'd be after such an ordeal.

I think I've decided what I'm gonna be for Halloween but I am not prepared to tell. My costume concept requires some arts & crafts wizardry and assembly, and ya see, if I don't pull it off, my discretion at present will make it easier for me to pretend that the idea never was. I may or may not keep y'all posted...

I have a stash of Bazooka Joe candy (a Halloween assortment) at my desk. I'm thinking-- I would not be at all disappointed if they totally discontinued Bazooka Joe comics. They are invariably, without fail, UNFUNNY, "Hey Bazooka Joe, why did Mort throw a clock out the window?" "Because....he wanted to SEE TIME FLY!!!" HARDY FREAKIN' HAR HAR BAZOOKA JOE , THAT ONE'S AS OLD AS G.D. METHUSELAH, DON'T BE SUCH A NIMROD ALL YOUR FICTIONAL LIFE, OK? And yet I always read them, and it's always a big fat letdown.

Oh, how I wish that Big League Chew put out a bag of assorted Halloween treats. Now THAT is some high qual shit , the Big League Chew. It's got incredible flavor longevity, does not congeal into a hardy rubber that strains one's jaw, AND you get complete portion control. I can't say enough good things about Big League Chew. Well, I should stipulate actually-- this praise pertains to the pink, original recipe B.L.C. , as I have not had extensive experience with the more frou-frou gourmet flavors.

Okey dokey artichokeys...I'm fresh out of insight, wit, and nonsensical blathering. Adieu until the morrow...
